Territorians deserve clear answers from the CLP Government about the disruption to Darwin’s water supply.

Late last night, CLP Ministers simply shared Power and Water’s statement on social media confirming flooding had forced the Darwin River Dam pump station offline.

Information circulating last night suggested the incident occurred around 4:37pm, yet Territorians waited hours before CLP Ministers shared Power and Water’s update on social media.

This is critical infrastructure that supplies water to thousands of homes, hospitals and businesses across the Darwin region.

Territorians deserve more than a social media repost, they deserve accountability and clear advice about what this means for the security of their water supply.

The Territory has experienced sustained wet season conditions for weeks, and the Darwin River Dam spillway has reportedly been overflowing since the start of the year.

A situation like this should have been anticipated, and contingency planning should already have been in place to protect critical infrastructure.

Across the Top End we are already seeing empty supermarket shelves as flooding disrupts freight, and now Territorians are being told the main water supply to Darwin has been impacted.

If the CLP Government cannot manage these compounding emergencies, they should be calling in Federal support.

The CLP Government must urgently provide a clear public update today outlining to Territorians how long the Darwin River Dam pump station could remain offline, what contingency measures are in place to maintain supply.

Parliament exists for scrutiny, not silence, but that’s what the CLP has dished up this week.

For the past three days in Parliament, the CLP has blocked questions and shut down debate, avoiding accountability for the Chief Minister’s poor choice appointing the Northern Territory Administrator.

For three days, questions have been asked on behalf of Territorians about the vetting of this appointment and offensive public comments about women, First Nations people and LGBTIQ+ Territorians.

These questions go to whether the Chief Minister’s choice for Administrator meets the most basic standards of integrity expected by the community.

The CLP needs to stop avoiding scrutiny, admit this is a bad call, and answer up.

This role belongs to the Territory, not the government of the day. It must stand up to scrutiny, not be hidden from it. Territorians deserve answers.

Territorians are under real pressure right now, with rising bills, record-high rents and everyday costs making it harder to get by.

Households across the Northern Territory are being forced to make tough choices just to cover the basics.

Which is why the Labor Opposition will be fighting for:

Cost of living relief
Safe affordable housing
A health system that works
Education training and local jobs
Stronger outcomes for Aboriginal Territorians

After more than 520 days in Government, Territorians are still waiting to see real cost of living relief, with fuel prices, airfares and new fees on nursing students adding to the pressure on households.

Costs are also being pushed onto local councils, which means more pressure on ratepayers and fewer resources for local services.

The housing crisis is hitting communities from Darwin to Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and remote communities, with fewer new homes and the CLP walking away from national housing targets.

Failures to properly invest in public housing are leaving too many people without safe, secure and affordable places to live.

The health system is under serious strain, with longer emergency wait times, growing surgery backlogs and worsening staff shortages, leaving families waiting longer and frontline workers under even more pressure.

While these health strains are impacting all Territorians, the CLP has prioritised spending on prisons over hospitals, clinics and maternity services, and that is a clear choice that is hurting Territorians.

Territorians deserve lower bills, more homes being built, shorter waits in hospitals and real relief from rising living costs.

That is what will be fought for and that is what Territorians should expect to see delivered.

The latest findings of the NT Children’s Commissioner lay bare a system that is failing Territory children and the Territory community.

Too many children are being funnelled from trauma and family violence into the youth justice system instead of receiving care, protection and support.

Recent reporting from the Commissioner clearly exposes the direct links between child protection involvement, family and domestic violence, poor mental health and youth detention.

This confirms what families and communities have been saying for years - there is little protection or justice for children in our systems.

The report shows a clear pipeline from family violence, trauma and child protection into youth detention. Most children in detention are Aboriginal, with many being held on remand. Many have already been in care and exposed to serious harm.

The Commissioner has also warned that removing children from their communities and detaining them far from family and culture undermines rehabilitation and deepens trauma, particularly for Aboriginal children.

This is not about bad kids. It is about a system that steps in too late and responds with punishment instead of providing support when it matters most.

The CLP Government’s tough on crime approach is not fixing the problem. It is making it worse by locking up traumatised children instead of investing early in families, mental health and community-led support.

Real reform means shifting from punishment to prevention. The CLP Government must change course now and invest in what we know actually works to protect children and make safer communities for everyone.

It has been several days since Territorians have heard from Lia Finocchiaro, despite growing concerns surrounding the appointment of Mr David Connolly as Administrator of the Northern Territory.

Community leaders and Territorians remain deeply concerned about whether he can represent all people with the respect and bi-partisanship the Office of the Administrator is expected to fulfil.

For one of the most significant appointments in the Territory, the Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro saying she was unaware of these issues is simply not good enough. This is no longer just about one individual. It is about the Chief Minister’s flawed judgment and whether proper processes were followed.

I have requested a full briefing with the Chief Minister on how this appointment was vetted, what checks were undertaken, and how his past public comments were missed in the vetting process. Territorians are entitled to know whether this was a failure of process or a failure of leadership – or both.

The role of Administrator is meant to reflect the values of the whole Territory. It requires deep understanding and respect of our communities, our diversity and the lived experiences of people right across the Northern Territory.

Territorians are entitled to ask whether Lia Finocchiaro properly considered what level of experience and understanding of the broader Territory is required for this important role.

Finocchiaro’s silence is not leadership. Territorians deserve answers, accountability and transparency. There is a clear pattern growing when concerns from the community are expressed about the CLP Government, Lia Finocchiaro is no where to be seen.

Confidence in this appointment has been badly damaged. Lia Finocchiaro must front up, explain how this was allowed to happen, and take responsibility for restoring trust in the integrity of the Administrator’s office.

The Chief Minister must immediately reconsider her decision to appoint David Connolly as Administrator of the Northern Territory.

Mr Connolly is undoubtedly a strong advocate for our cattle industry.

However, the role of Administrator is to bring the Territory together and represent all Territorians with integrity, respect and political neutrality.

Public comments attributed to Mr Connolly have raised serious questions about whether he can meet those standards and carry out the role in a way that unites the community.

Lia Finocchiaro says she was unaware of these matters at the time of appointment. If that is the case, it raises serious concerns about the due diligence undertaken before this decision was made. The Chief Minister is certainly aware now of these public comments and must act.

The responsible course of action is clear. This appointment should be put on hold and reviewed.

I have written to the Governor-General outlining these concerns and requesting that further advice be sought in light of recent reports.

The Northern Territory’s greatest strength is our diversity and our inclusiveness, our ability to stand together and support each other. Territorians deserve an Administrator who brings people together and reflects the values of respect and inclusion.

Puberty blockers are not the problem, the problem is the CLP Government using secrecy, fear-mongering and political stunts to interfere in children’s healthcare.

Once again, the CLP Government is singling out a small and vulnerable group of young people and families, turning their healthcare into a political battleground rather than treating them with dignity and respect.

Families accessing gender-affirming healthcare already go through a strict and rigorous clinical process involving specialist assessment, parental consent and ongoing medical supervision.

These decisions are careful, considered and guided by medical expertise, pretending otherwise is misleading and irresponsible.

Protecting children is not about imposing blanket bans from behind closed doors. It is about listening to families, trusting medical experts and ensuring young people are supported, safe and respected.

Making this announcement just before Christmas is cowardly. It avoids scrutiny and leaves families carrying the burden over the holiday period.

The CLP Government had failed to explain the details of this ban, when it will come into effect, how long it will last, what happens to children under care, leaving families in limbo.

We believe everyone deserves to be who they are and to have autonomy over their own body. That principle applies whether it is abortion, voluntary assisted dying or access to healthcare.

The Labor Opposition is calling on the CLP Government to release full details of its Banned Drinkers Register Review and provide a clear timeline for action on the Taskforce’s recommendations.

A motion moved in Parliament today highlights that the Review undertaken by the CLP’s own Alcohol Policy Taskforce made up of NT Health, Licensing NT, the Department of the Attorney-General and Justice and NT Police has recommended a number of significant changes, including:

Enforceable undertakings requiring on-premises ID scanning for licensees who repeatedly breach liquor licence conditions.
An opt-in ID-scanning system for clubs choosing to participate.
Broader data-sharing arrangements between agencies and increased training for authorised personnel.

The CLP went to the 2024 election promising this review. More than a year on, Territorians have no idea if the Government intends to implement its own recommendations.

The motion calls on the Minister for Alcohol Policy to table a Ministerial Report by 12 March 2026, outlining:

Progress on implementing all recommendations arising from the Review; and
A timeline for any legislation needed to give effect to the Taskforce’s work.

Territorians deserve transparency. If the CLP is serious about tackling alcohol-fuelled harm, it must show how and when it plans to act on the findings of its own review.

Territorians deserve to feel safe in their homes, on our buses and in every part of our community.

This rushed Bill runs the risk of making the community less safe and creating a second, cheaper class of Constable, who will be denied the same training, support, pay and conditions as other police officers.

The CLP is pushing barely trained officers into volatile situations with guns and tasers. This model is not safe enough for our community, and it is not responsible enough to support.

Frontline workers and Territorians carry the greatest risk when governments chase headlines.

Key concerns include:

• Training that is dangerously short, officers will be armed with guns after only 18 weeks.

• No clarity on pay and conditions, raising real concerns about how these officers will be supported.

• High-risk powers in inexperienced hands, officers will face volatile incidents without constable-level training.

• Greater risk in mental health emergencies, people in crisis will encounter armed officers instead of clinicians.

• Serious gaps in body-worn camera protections, sensitive footage could be shared without firm safeguards.

• Weakened vetting standards, people previously ruled out could now be recruited.

• No transparency on cost, Territorians still do not know what this will cost or how it will be funded.

• A rushed and chaotic rollout, stakeholders were sidelined, and critical safety details are unresolved.

Territorians deserve evidence-based solutions that tackle the causes of crime. Mental health co-responders, domestic violence teams, stable housing and strong alcohol policy make communities safer.

These programs prevent violence before it happens and reduce pressure on police. They deliver real safety and real stability where it matters.

The CLP has ignored these solutions and chosen the fastest headline instead of the safest plan. This Bill is unsafe, unprepared and the under resourced for the Territory.

ALMOST NO TERRITORIAN ELIGIBLE FOR CLP’s GAMMON RELIEF PAYMENTS

The Chief Minister owes Territorians an explanation for relief payments that sound good on paper but help almost no one.

The one-off Immediate Hardship Grant payments offering $309 per child, $611 per adult and $1537 per family are meant to help people across the Top End impacted by Cyclone Fina with the cost of basic needs including food, transport, medical supplies and clothing.

However, the criteria for Immediate Hardship Grant payments are only available to people who were evacuated during the cyclone, which rules out nearly every single person impacted by Fina. People who went to an emergency cyclone shelter are also ineligible.

These relief payments have been purposely designed to knock out a majority of Territorians in their biggest time of need.

A small number of affected households who have had their power out for 72 hours or more will be able to access a $250 payment, the same amount as was made available following Cyclone Marcus 7 years ago, despite rising cost of living expenses.

While the Commonwealth provides funding support towards these relief payments it is the NT Government that determines what assistance measures will be activated, and the areas in which they will be made available.

It is beyond belief that the CLP Government made clear decisions around not evacuating people from places like Minjilang and the Tiwi Islands, which were smashed by the cyclone, and then turns around and says only people who were evacuated are eligible for a relief payment.

Not a single Territorian was evacuated prior to or during Cyclone Fina as directed by the CLP Government.

Member for Arafura, Manuel Brown has been receiving endless calls and emails from constituents on the Tiwi Islands who are confused, distressed and upset about the Government’s lack of care for them in the wake of the cyclone. Darwin residents are feeling the same.

NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Power and Water and other agencies have done an outstanding job of supporting communities.

It’s a shame the CLP Government have abandoned the very Territorians they are elected to represent.

CLP RUSHES MAJOR INTEGRITY OVERHAUL WITHOUT SCRUTINY

The CLP’s Integrity and Ethics Commissioner Bill is a step backwards for transparency and accountability in the Northern Territory.

The Bill collapses four independent oversight bodies the ICAC, Ombudsman, Information Commissioner and Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner into a single office.

The NT Opposition has the following concerns about the proposed new body in Parliament today:

A single Commissioner would control investigations, complaints and integrity functions across all four agencies, creating major and unavoidable conflict-of-interest risks.
The Government has provided no explanation for how one Commissioner can credibly manage the workload and complexity of four agencies.
Each existing integrity body has been found to be under-resourced and under-funded, yet no additional resources are being provided for this new mega-agency.
The Chief Minister claims the mega-agency is not a cost-cutting exercise, yet her own review identifies ‘economies of scale’ as the primary benefit, with no detail on budget or costings.
The Government refused to send the Bill to its own Scrutiny Committee, providing no opportunity for the Bill to be fully considered by the community or stakeholders.
It is not clear what influence or decision-making the new CEO position, to be filled by a public servant, will have over the Commission’s integrity operations.
It is not clear whether staff of the Commission report to the Commissioner or the CEO.

This is a significant change to the way public sector integrity and accountability is monitored and upheld. The fact that the Chief Minister refused to send this Bill to the Scrutiny Committee is beyond ironic.

It is yet another example of this Government refusing to be upfront and honest with Territorians about changes that significantly impact them, and their real motives for making these changes.

This Bill reduces oversight and opens up serious conflict of interest concerns at a time when Territorians expect stronger integrity protections, not weaker ones. The Government has failed to demonstrate how its model will maintain independence or improve accountability.

Labor is calling for a mandatory 12-month report back to Parliament so Territorians can see the real impact of these changes. Oversight must be robust, independent and open to public scrutiny.

Any appointments to the Commissioner, CEO and Inspector roles must be open, transparent and merit based. Territorians deserve integrity positions filled on competence, not political convenience.

CLP LEAVES TERRITORIANS IN THE DARK

The Territory Labor Opposition has called on the CLP to immediately reinstate the underground power program for the northern suburbs of Darwin.

More than 19,500 households lost power during Cyclone Fina, with thousands of households expected to wait up to a week to have their power restored.

As families are forced to throw out food and manage by torchlight, the Chief Minister continues to deflect questions about undergrounding power, demonstrating it’s simply not a priority for the CLP.

A sincere thank you goes to the Power and Water crews who have been working tirelessly in difficult conditions to restore power for Territorians. Their efforts have been exceptional and are deeply appreciated as communities work through this recovery.

Several of the suburbs facing the longest outages were due to receive underground power under Labor’s funded program. That work was fully designed, costed and ready to begin before the CLP cancelled it in their first Budget this year in May.

Planning work and procurement were already underway for the first stages in Nakara, Wagaman, Larrakeyah and Alawa.

These upgrades were designed to make the network stronger and reduce the kind of outages people are experiencing now. The CLP walked away from that work, leaving thousands more Territorians exposed during severe weather.

Labor completed underground power upgrades to nine Darwin schools between 2019 and 2023 which demonstrated how critical and effective this work is. Those community hubs now have safer and more reliable power during cyclones and severe weather events.

The Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says Territorians are “built for this”, yet her government cancelled the very upgrades that would have protected the communities still sitting in the dark. Territorians should not be left vulnerable because the CLP abandoned critical upgrades.

The CLP should remember that investing in Territorian’s safety should be the long term plan of any Government, not a headline grabbing stunt.

The Territory Labor Opposition welcomes the announcement of the NT Police Anti-Racism Action Plan as a constructive and necessary step towards a fairer and more accountable Police Force.

Our Territory police do incredibly important and difficult work in our community, often in challenging circumstances.

We congratulate them for their leadership in confronting a difficult issue and taking proactive steps towards meaningful cultural reform that will ultimately make our community safer.

This strategy provides a strong pathway forward to build greater trust between police and the communities they serve.

It will help strengthen relationships and allow both police and communities to move forward together. However, the burden of implementing this plan cannot and should not rest solely with the Police Force.

It is incumbent on the Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro to show genuine leadership, to take responsibility, properly resource this work, and engage honestly with communities.

To date, the CLP Government has largely washed its hands of the challenges police are facing and shied away from the hard conversations that real change requires.

If the Chief Minister is real about supporting our Police, she must provide regular updates to Parliament on the progress of the Action Plan; this is not something she can simply set and forget and hope nobody notices. No more burying her head in the sand and waiting for the storm to blow over.

Real leadership means standing alongside police, not leaving them to carry the weight of reform alone and listening to the concerns from the community so that the Territory can move forward together.

The CLP Government’s “High-Level Strategy Framework” for the tourism industry once again demonstrates their preference for style over substance.

The Minister for Tourism and Hospitality has delivered a document with repackaged aspirations instead of real long-term actions.

The tourism sector has delivered some clear messages to the Government about what they need, but the CLP has stopped listening and stopped investing.

In just 14 months, the CLP Government has slammed the brakes on our visitor economy:

They have cut funding to the combined tourism, events and screen sector by a whopping 23 per cent;
The screen industry alone has suffered a $1.5 million cut under the CLP compared to the previous financial year;
Despite the tourism industry highlighting the importance of cultural tourism, they have ripped funding out of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery in Alice Springs — a project that would have attracted 53,000 visitors and injected $64 million into the economy each year;
They have scrapped the Darwin State Square Art Gallery and left it as an empty shell;
They have scaled back tourism investments, including scrapping upgrades to the Central Arnhem Road and Alice Springs tourism infrastructure; and
They have failed to keep routes flying into Central Australia year-round.

The CLP can rush out all the glossy “high-level strategy frameworks” they like — but their cuts to tourism tell a different story.

Under the former Territory Labor Government, action and industry growth were driven by a comprehensive and well-considered tourism industry strategy, a cruise tourism strategy, an Aboriginal tourism strategy, a long-term business events strategy, a drive tourism strategy, an aviation strategy and the Territory Aviation Scheme — all designed to strengthen visitation, connectivity, and investment.

Territory Labor backs the people who keep this industry running, with a record of delivering real projects, supporting operators and driving visitation across the Territory.

We acknowledge their contribution to the 2025 Visitor Economy Strategy and will continue to call for projects and investment that deliver them real results.

The Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals have now called multiple Code Yellows, despite the Minister for Health Steve Edgington trumpeting just months ago that they were no longer required.

For over 14 months the CLP Government has shown a blatant disregard for our Territory public health system, a system highly valued by every Territorian.

While the Federal Labor Government stumped up a record 30% funding increase to help reduce emergency department wait times and cut surgical backlogs, the Territory health system remains in crisis.

This is because the CLP Government has failed to take meaningful action to alleviate the burden on our hospitals.

Territorians are forced to wait for hours to see a doctor.

Essential regional health infrastructure investments have been cut, leaving residents with no choice but to travel to our major centres for care, putting further pressure on hospitals.

Meanwhile our maternity services remain chronically understaffed and expectant mothers and babies are put at risk because they can’t be guaranteed continuity of care.

Frontline health staff are exhausted and demoralised, with some resorting to industrial action due to inadequate EBA offers.

The Territory Labor Opposition commends our Territory healthcare staff for the work they do under significant pressure every day and for their incredible dedication and resilience which is truly extraordinary.

The CLP needs to stop deflecting and finger pointing and get on with their job, for the sake of Territorians and our health staff.

CLP REFUSES SCRUTINY ON INTEGRITY AND ETHICS COMMISSIONER BILL

The CLP has refused to send its own Integrity and Ethics Commissioner Bill to the Legislative Scrutiny Committee.

And it’s hard to imagine anything more ironic or more hypocritical than a government refusing scrutiny on its own Integrity Bill.

That’s not transparency. That’s not accountability. And Territorians deserve better.

The Scrutiny Committee exists to do one simple thing make sure laws are tested in public, with expert input and community oversight. It’s how good governments build trust.

Territory Labor Opposition supports reforms that strengthen integrity and rebuild confidence in the Territory’s institutions. But that confidence must be earned through daylight, not secrecy.

This year, less than a quarter of all Bills introduced to Parliament have been sent to the Scrutiny Committee, just 11 out of 48.

The CLP treats scrutiny as optional dodging accountability whenever it suits them.

By blocking committee referral, the CLP has shut Territorians out of a conversation about the very laws designed to protect honesty and accountability in public life.

The ICAC’s reputation has been damaged, and restoring trust means doing the work properly thoroughly and transparently.

If the CLP were serious about integrity, they would welcome scrutiny not run from it.

The Attorney-General’s department is at the centre of those claims, and Territorians deserve a clear explanation.

Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby’s integrity is again now under serious scrutiny. It’s her department, her responsibility, and Territorians deserve to know what really happened.

This follows recent questions about the Attorney-General’s own judgment and integrity, and Territorians have every right to expect higher standards from the person responsible for upholding the law.

If there’s nothing to hide, the CLP should release the full correspondence to make clear who authorised the interference and why did the Attorney-General make the request.

Judicial independence is not negotiable, and Territorians expect their government to act with honesty and integrity.

The CLP’s decision to push ahead with its Anti-Discrimination Amendment Bill is a moment that takes us backwards, when we should be moving forward together.

This isn’t about balance or free speech, its politics designed to divide.

Instead of focusing on cost of living, housing, jobs and our health system, the CLP is fixated on wedge politics and culture wars.

A report today showed rents are soaring, families are under severe housing stress, and people are struggling to afford the basics.

While Territorians do it tough, the CLP is choosing to weaken protections and rewrite equality laws.

Our laws once set the national standard for fairness and equality. They weren’t broken, and no one was asking for change.

Rolling them back isn’t reform, it’s regression. It’s about politics, not progress.

This is about more than laws, it’s about decency, respect and who we are as a community.

And on top of this backward, archaic move, the Chief Minister continues to divide Territorians, telling trans women they are not who they say they are and that they don’t belong here.

It’s cruel, unnecessary and wrong.

Instead of punching down on people who just want to live their lives, the CLP should be fixing the housing crisis, rebuilding the health system, and helping Territorians who are doing it tough.

We don’t build a stronger Territory by dividing it.

We build it by looking after each other.

The CLP Government has been dealt a humiliating blow, with thousands of Northern Territory public servants rejecting its proposed Northern Territory Public Sector 2025 - 2029 Enterprise Agreement.

Almost 5,000 workers voted NO, compared to fewer than 3,000 in support. This is a clear message that Territorians have lost confidence in the Government’s approach to its largest workforce.

Instead of addressing job security, workload pressures and retention incentives, the CLP tried to push through a deal that undervalues public servants and leaves them worse off in real terms.

This failure comes on top of hospital pharmacists and pharmacy technicians threatening to go on strike citing worsening staff shortages that are pushing our hospitals into crisis and leaving patients at risk of missing out on vital medications and essential care.

Allied Health Professionals remain among the lowest paid health workers in the country, and the CLP has offered nothing to fix staff shortages, unsafe workloads and the exodus of experienced professionals.

The rejection of the Northern Territory Public Service EBA proves the CLP has no plan to recruit, retain or respect the workers who keep the Territory running.

Wages are going backwards, allied health workers remain at the bottom of national pay scales, and there are no meaningful incentives to attract or keep staff in remote and regional areas.

From schools to hospitals, police to frontline community services, Territorians are being let down by a Government that refuses to back its own workforce.

CLP Integrity in Tatters

It has been five days since the conflict of interest involving Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby came to light, five days of excuses and cover-ups, while Lia Finocchiaro hides from responsibility despite knowing about this conflict for more than a year.

In that time, Boothby has fronted press conferences, made government announcements and fumbled through serious questioning about this breach, as if nothing is wrong. That is simply not acceptable.

There are serious questions that Boothby and Finocchiaro must answer:

If Ms Boothby declared this conflict last year while in Opposition, why was it not declared again when she entered Government and became Attorney-General, the Territory’s top law officer?
Why did she fail to declare it at her press conference last Thursday, when directly asked about the case?
If the media hadn’t exposed it, when would Territorians have been told?
How exactly did Boothby inform the Leader last year? Was it a legitimate declaration, or just a quiet conversation behind closed doors?
Acting Chief Minister Gerard Maley said this morning he knew 3 weeks ago, why was he not informed when Boothby was sworn in as Attorney-General?
When was the full Cabinet informed of this conflict, or has the entire Government been kept in the dark?
There has been ample time to come forward, why not release a statement last Monday morning when the case was in court, instead of waiting until the media uncovered it?
How can Territorians trust an Attorney-General who hides conflicts, dodges scrutiny, and only admits the truth when caught?
Shouldn’t Lia Finocchiaro have stayed back from her holiday to face this crisis, instead of hoping it would blow over while she’s away?

The CLP say they stand for certainty, action and security. We hear this time and time again, yet for five days Territorians have seen nothing but secrecy, distraction and double standards.

The truth is the CLP cannot be trusted, their two most senior figures have shown they are more interested in keeping personal secrets than being honest with Territorians.

If Lia Finocchiaro was true to her word about transparency and integrity, she would have already asked Marie-Clare Boothby to stand down. If she can’t act on a clear conflict of interest in her own Cabinet, then her promises of integrity mean nothing.

The Attorney-General has been caught out, publicly commenting on a case involving her own family

member without declaring the clear conflict of interest.

In her statement today, Marie-Clare Boothby admitted that “my sister’s stepson was involved in the

June 2024 incident” and insisted that “at all times I have acted with integrity.”

Let’s be real, she’s only admitting this now because she’s been caught out.

But what she still won’t admit is the real issue, she failed to declare this conflict of interest when she

first commented on the case. That silence is the breach of trust.

The Territory’s first law officer must meet the highest standards of integrity and transparency. This

case is not new, she has had ample time to declare it.

Instead, she stood at a press conference, looked Territorians in the eye, and kept it a secret. She

even sent out two media releases yesterday, again failing to address this issue.

This is not a minor lapse in judgment. It is a lie by omission, and Territorians deserve better.

As the Attorney-General, she cannot hold the highest legal office in the Territory while hiding

conflicts of interest and misleading the public.

Marie-Clare Boothby has lost all credibility. If she had any integrity she would resign..

National Climate Risk

The National Climate Risk Assessment confirms the Northern Territory will face some of the most

severe impacts of climate change in Australia.

It shows we are on the frontline of escalating extreme heat, disrupted supply chains from flooding

and severe rain, and growing pressure on our health services, infrastructure and communities.

Territorians deserve a government that takes this risk seriously. Instead, the CLP has walked away

from renewable energy targets, scrapped emissions commitments and left the Territory exposed.

Their refusal to plan is reckless and short-sighted.

Labor believes in building a safer Territory that is better prepared and protected.

That means working with local government, the Federal Government and communities to plan for

climate impacts, invest in renewables, and safeguard Territorians from the economic and social

shocks this report warns are inevitable without action.

The CLP can ignore the evidence, but Territorians will live with the consequences. We deserve

leadership that faces up to these risks and acts to secure our future.

CLP Pull their Divisive Anti-Discrimination Bill

This was a divisive law from the start.

It was never about uniting Territorians but about pandering to keyboard warriors and opening the

door to hate speech.

The CLP put it forward knowing it would divide communities and wind back hard-fought protections.

Their own backbenchers fear it’s gone too far while other stakeholders feel they’ve been misled by

the government about what’s actually in the Bill.

This is not leadership.

Pepper Spray Rollout is a Stunt not a Safe Strategy

We are just days away from Territorians being allowed to carry pepper spray and the Finocchiaro

Government still hasn’t outlined how this will work or how it will make anyone feel safer in the long

term.

Instead of answers, Territorians are being handed a risky scheme with no consultation, no evidence,

and no plan – which is why a delay is needed until the legitimate questions from Territorians are

answered.

Due to the CLP’s lack of consultation and care for the Territory, twenty-one civil society groups,

frontline workers and victim support organisations have raised concerns in an open letter.

They warn that arming the public will escalate violence, criminalise more people and put vulnerable

Territorians, especially women, children and Aboriginal communities, at greater risk.

Territorians deserve to know the detail: who will be eligible, how misuse will be prevented, and what

safeguards will exist.

Again and again, the CLP writes laws on the run, sidelines experts, declares urgency without details

and leaves Territorians to deal with the consequences – tough talk, reckless action, no real results.

Community safety will never come from flooding our streets with weapons. It will come from

addressing the root causes of crime, investing in housing, health, youth services, education, mental

health and rehabilitation. These are the solutions that reduce reoffending and keep families safe.

If Lia Finocchiaro was serious about crime, she would be sitting down with police, frontline workers,

victims and communities to build evidence-based solutions, not handing out pepper spray and

hoping for the best.

Territorians deserve a government that listens, leads and delivers real safety, not chaos dressed up

as policy, or stunts dressed up as solutions.

Territory Treasurer Hooks a Pattern — Missing Again When It Matters Most

The CLP Government has made it clear: the Territory Investment Summit is the centrepiece of their economic strategy. So where was the Treasurer?

While investors gathered to talk about rebuilding the economy, the Territory’s First Minister for the Economy, Treasurer Bill Yan, was nowhere to be seen. Instead, the Government sent a junior Minister with no economic responsibilities to manage the summit.

This is the same Treasurer who went fishing while the Territory’s Budget papers were being finalised — and now refuses to say whether he was fishing again instead of doing his job at the Territory’s most important economic event. Is Bill Yan the Treasurer, or just another absentee passenger in a Government running on autopilot?

Either the Chief Minister deliberately sidelined her own Treasurer, or Bill Yan once again decided to cast a line instead of showing up for work. Whichever way you look at it, the message to investors is clear: this Government is not serious about economic leadership.

If the Chief Minister has lost confidence in her Treasurer, she should say so. And if Bill Yan can’t be trusted to show up for the Territory’s premier investment event, why should Territorians trust him to manage the Budget?

CLP Attacks on Coroner Show a Government in Crisis and Without a Plan

Territorians are rightfully concerned that instead of taking real steps to improve community safety, the CLP Government is attacking the Northern Territory Coroner — a respected, independent officer of the court — in what appears to be a desperate attempt to deflect from its own failings.

In recent days, the Chief Minister, the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence, and even the Deputy Chief Minister have either criticised the Coroner or refused to express confidence in her — a disgraceful display of political cowardice.

When faced with serious findings and recommendations from the Coroner, responsible leaders reflect and act. The CLP's response? Lash out and attack the messenger.

This isn’t leadership — it’s deflection. It’s the behaviour of a Government with no solutions, no substance, and no respect for the institutions that hold power to account.

Rather than owning up to their failures — whether it’s cuts to domestic violence shelters, rising crime, or a crumbling justice system — the CLP would rather attack an independent officer of the court who is doing her job: investigating the facts and telling the truth.

Territorians expect accountability. They expect action. What they’re getting from the CLP is blame-shifting, bullying, and finger-pointing.

The CLP Government has no credible plan to make our communities safer, no strategy to improve the justice system, and no willingness to accept responsibility. So instead, they attack the Coroner.

CLP’s rushed youth justice laws are a dangerous backward step

For four days, the CLP Government has claimed that its rushed youth justice legislation will fix the Territory’s crime crisis. But what they’ve delivered today won’t reduce crime, won’t reduce reoffending and won’t keep Territorians safe.

The truth is simple, these changes do nothing to prevent youth crime from happening in the first place or re-offending in the future. This is the fourth time in less than a year the CLP has rewritten the Youth Justice Act

on urgency. Every time, they’ve failed to consult with the frontline. And every time, crime has gotten worse.

This latest move is nothing more than chaos disguised as policy, a kneejerk reaction to mounting public pressure, not a real plan to break the cycle of youth offending. Stripping away basic sentencing principles and ramping up punitive measures might grab headlines, but it does nothing to change the root causes of crime. This is a government trying to fix crime with press releases and panic.

If the Finocchiaro Government was serious about tackling crime, it would fund the preventative programs, diversion services and youth boot camps it promised during the election campaign. Instead, they’ve gutted services, ignored communities, and are now rewriting laws in desperation to cover their failure.

The Opposition believes in a justice system that keeps people safe, but also one that works. And the CLP’s current approach is failing on every front. Territorians want safety, accountability, and real outcomes, not another round of rushed laws that treat symptoms while ignoring the cause. The Government must front up, stump up the money, and get serious about long-term investment in crime prevention or they will keep failing Territorians and making our communities less safe.

CLP Weakens Hate Speech Protections to Appease Keyboard Warriors

The CLP Government’s push to water down the Northern Territory’s anti-discrimination laws is not about protecting “freedoms” — it’s about protecting hate speech. Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby today claimed the changes are about “restoring freedom,” yet failed to name a single right or freedom that has been curtailed under the existing Act.

If the CLP believe there are certain slurs, insults or offensive views they’re unable to say publicly, perhaps they should stop hiding behind press releases and use parliamentary privilege to spell them out clearly.

Instead of standing up for everyday Territorians ,for people who deserve to live without being humiliated, intimidated or vilified for who they are, the CLP are defending the rights of keyboard warriors to cause harm under the guise of free speech.

The laws passed by the previous Labor Government were designed to protect people from public acts that were objectively likely to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate based on a protected attribute including race, sexuality, gender, disability or religion. The CLP’s new “higher threshold” isn’t about clarity, it’s about letting more hate go unchallenged.

This is a government more interested in fuelling culture wars than keeping Territorians safe. They’ve done it without producing a single example of how the current protections have gone too far, just vague scare tactics and baseless slogans. Labor will always stand with the communities that are most affected by

discrimination, not with those who seek to excuse or enable it.

Clp government failing Territorians: Labor to move matter of public importance

The Territory Labor Opposition will today move a Matter of Public Importance (MPI) in Parliament, calling out the CLP Government’s growing list of broken promises, reckless funding cuts and failure to provide a clear economic vision for the Northern Territory.

Since coming to power in August 2024, the CLP has walked away from multiple key election commitments, many with no notice, no consultation, and no explanation to the communities affected.

Among the broken promises and failures Territory Labor will highlight:

Scrapping the underground power project for Darwin’s northern suburbs
Gutting land servicing works associated with a new 120-bed residential aged are facility in the Palmerston Regional Health Precinct.
Walking away from their own climate change and renewables targets

CLP Crime Chaos: All Spin, No Safety

Territorians were promised a safer Territory within 100 days of the CLP Government taking office. We’re now well past that deadline, and crime is still rising. Over the weekend, a 15-year-old was stabbed at the Darwin Show, one of the Territory’s most iconic family events. No parent should have to fear sending their

child to a community event.

This is the fourth time in under a year that the CLP has rewritten justice laws on urgency. Each time, they’ve ignored expert advice. And each time, crime has gotten worse. These rushed, kneejerk laws are chaos disguised as policy — no consultation, no evidence, no real plan.

The CLP talks tough but acts recklessly. They’ve cut support for victims, scrapped the Minimum Unit Price making alcohol cheaper, and failed to roll our preventative programs they promised like boot camps.

The Opposition has supported a number of the CLP’s law changes, including those passed on urgency, but we cannot continue to support a government that refuses to govern transparently or consult the community.

This law-and-order agenda is not a strategy , it’s a stunt. And every time the CLP pats themselves on the back, the Territory community pays the price. If the Government is serious about tackling crime, they must sit down with police, frontline workers, communities and experts to develop real, evidence-based

solutions, not just repeat failed policies and hope for a different outcome.

CLP Government’s Victory Lap on Crime an Insult to Territorians

The CLP Government has today issued a self-congratulatory media release on crime statistics, despite the fact that violent crime in the Northern Territory is getting worse.

Adult sexual assault is up 25 per cent.
Child sexual assault is up 2 per cent.
Serious assault is up 4 per cent.
Assaults on frontline workers are up 12 per cent.

Instead of fronting up and explaining these shameful figures, Lia Finocchiaro is trying to hoodwink Territorians with spin-filled press releases before the official statistics are even released publicly.

Only the CLP could think it’s appropriate to take a victory lap while sexual assaults, serious assaults and attacks on frontline workers are rising. This is not leadership, it’s political PR at its worst.

The Territory Labor Opposition will continue to hold this Government to account for its failure to keep Territorians safe. Our communities deserve honesty, real solutions, and a genuine plan to bring crime down, not more empty headlines from a Government obsessed with its own image.

Territory Labor’s Legacy Delivers New Mandorah Marine Facilities

Member for Daly, Dheran Young, today joined residents and community leaders to celebrate the official opening of the new Mandorah Marine Facilities — a major project funded and largely delivered by the previous Territory Labor Government. The new ferry terminal, ferry pontoon, car park, boat trailer park and boat ramp are now open to the public, with SeaLink ferry services operating from the new pontoon from this

morning.

The project represents a significant investment in community infrastructure that will benefit residents of Wagait Beach, Belyuen and visitors for decades to come. It was a proud day for the community, with the new facilities making travel safer, more accessible and more reliable for locals, visitors and workers. It was the previous Labor Government that committed the funding and oversaw the delivery of this vital infrastructure, and we are pleased to see it completed for the benefit of the region.

The new facilities are fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act, improving access for people with disability, parents with prams, and anyone needing mobility assistance. Two breakwater structures provide protection from sea swells, creating a calmer berthing environment for ferries, while upgrades to parking and passenger facilities improve convenience and comfort. Mr Young also thanked the project’s builder, SMC Marine, for their role in delivering the new facilities to a high standard. He said that investing in infrastructure like this isn’t just about bricks and mortar it is about creating safer journeys, supporting tourism, and giving locals the facilities they deserve.

We call on the Country Liberal Government to continue building on Labor’s record of delivering vital community infrastructure right across the Territory. The former Mandorah Jetty will no longer be used for ferry services, with all passengers now boarding and disembarking at the new pontoon. The old jetty can still be used for fishing.
