Ed Smelt was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly as the Member for Nightcliff at the March 2026 by-election, bringing with him nearly two decades of experience in infrastructure, planning and community development across the Territory and Australia.

A civil engineer by profession, Ed holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Melbourne.

His career has spanned both the public and private sectors, working across long-term infrastructure planning and project delivery.

Before entering Parliament, Ed served as the Chan Ward Councillor at the City of Darwin, where he built a reputation as a practical and community-focused advocate for safer public spaces, greener neighbourhoods and improved local infrastructure.

Ed’s connection to building the Territory runs deep. His family has a long history in engineering and construction, including his great-grandfather, who volunteered with the Civil Constructional Corps during World War II and helped support construction works on the Stuart Highway.

As a Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister, Ed is focused on practical solutions that improve everyday life for Territorians – delivering more housing, better infrastructure, stronger communities and sustainable economic growth.

For Ed and his wife Susannah, who was born and raised in Darwin, Nightcliff is more than a place to live – it is home. Together they are raising their four young boys in the local community they proudly represent.

Outside Parliament, Ed remains actively involved in community life through his children’s sporting activities, volunteering as a firefighter and serving on local school councils.
